Description
Columbia Agar Base is an enriched basal medium for cultivating fastidious microorganisms and observing haemolytic reactions.
The prepared medium is supplemented with approximately 5% sheep blood. It supports organisms including streptococci, staphylococci, pneumococci and Listeria and allows their haemolysis patterns to be evaluated.
Clinical material is inoculated and incubated at 36 ± 1°C for approximately 18–48 hours under aerobic, anaerobic or carbon-dioxide-enriched conditions, depending on the organism.
