Legionella testing
Legionella is a water-systems organism rather than a food one — controlled through engineering and monitored through culture, with a testing programme that answers to building safety regulation as much as to product quality.
Why Legionella testing is demanding
Legionella colonises warm water systems — cooling towers, calorifiers, spa pools, and the stagnant legs of building water distribution. Infection is by inhalation of aerosol rather than ingestion, which is why the risk concentrates around equipment that generates spray.
Its control is fundamentally an engineering matter: temperature regimes, flow, and the elimination of dead legs. Testing verifies that control rather than delivering it, and a positive result is read as evidence that the system, not the sample, needs attention.
Culture on buffered charcoal yeast extract with selective supplements remains the reference approach, and it is slow — up to ten days — because the organism is fastidious and slow-growing. PCR provides a much faster indication, but culture remains the method regulatory frameworks reference for confirmation.

Slow by nature — PCR indicates, culture confirms.
- Traditional · ISO 11731BCYE culture
Membrane filtration and culture on buffered charcoal yeast extract with selective supplements. Slow, but the method regulatory frameworks reference.
Time to resultUp to 10 days - RapidSelective plating formats
Ready-to-use GVPC formats that reduce preparation variability across a long incubation where consistency is difficult to maintain.
Time to result7–10 days - Molecular · qPCRFast system indication
Quantitative PCR giving a same-day indication of Legionella presence — valuable for triaging a suspect system while culture confirmation runs.
Time to resultSame day
A positive points at the system, not the sample — investigate the engineering.
