Description
EMB Levine Agar is a selective differential medium for isolating enteric Gram-negative bacteria from clinical specimens.
Eosin Y and methylene blue inhibit many Gram-positive organisms and differentiate lactose fermentation. Coliforms form blue-black colonies, while Salmonella and Shigella generally remain colourless or amber.
Clinical material is streaked for isolation and incubated at 35 ± 2°C for 18–24 hours, with further incubation when required. Colony appearance supports presumptive identification.
