Description
Lysine Iron Agar is a differential slant-and-butt medium for enteric Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Salmonella.
Lysine decarboxylation produces a purple butt, lysine deamination produces a red slant and hydrogen-sulfide production causes blackening. Glucose fermentation provides the initial acidic reaction required for interpretation.
A pure colony is inoculated by stabbing the butt and streaking the slant. Tubes are incubated at 36 ± 1°C and examined for the stated colour and blackening reactions.
