Description
Peptone Water is a general cultivation medium and a basal broth for indole and carbohydrate-fermentation tests.
Peptone supplies nutrients and tryptophan for the indole reaction, while sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance. Carbohydrates and an indicator may be added for fermentation studies.
A pure culture is incubated in the broth before Kovac's reagent is added for indole testing, or the completed carbohydrate formulation is examined for acid and gas production.
