Description
SS Agar Modified is a highly selective differential medium for isolating Salmonella and selected Shigella species.
Bile salts, sodium citrate and brilliant green inhibit Gram-positive bacteria and several Enterobacteriaceae. Lactose and neutral red differentiate fermenters, while thiosulfate and ferric ammonium citrate identify hydrogen-sulfide-producing colonies by a black centre.
Clinical or non-clinical material is streaked for isolation and incubated at 35 ± 2°C for 18–24 hours. Salmonella typically forms transparent colonies with black centres, while Shigella forms pale rose-to-colourless colonies.
