Description
Simmons Citrate Agar is a differential medium for Gram-negative enteric bacteria based on citrate utilisation.
Sodium citrate is the sole carbon source and ammonium phosphate is the sole nitrogen source. Citrate-positive growth produces alkaline products and changes bromothymol blue from green to blue.
A pure culture is lightly inoculated onto the slant and incubated at 35 ± 2°C for up to 48 hours. Growth with a blue colour change indicates a positive result.
