Description
Violet Red Bile Lactose Agar is a selective medium for isolating and enumerating coliform bacteria in food, water and other materials of sanitary importance.
Bile salts and crystal violet inhibit Gram-positive cocci, while lactose fermentation changes neutral red and produces purplish-red colonies, sometimes with a precipitation halo.
Samples and decimal dilutions are inoculated by pour or spread plating and incubated aerobically at 30°C or 37°C for 24 ± 2 hours. Characteristic colonies are counted and confirmed where required.
