Description
XLD Agar is a selective differential medium for isolating and differentiating Salmonella and Shigella from food, environmental and clinical samples.
Sodium deoxycholate inhibits most Gram-positive bacteria. Xylose, lactose and sucrose fermentation, lysine decarboxylation and hydrogen-sulfide production create characteristic colony reactions.
Samples or enrichment cultures are spread across the agar and incubated aerobically at 37 ± 1°C for up to 48 hours. Salmonella typically forms red colonies with black centres, while Shigella forms red colonies without blackening.
