Description
EC Broth is a selective liquid medium for detecting and enumerating coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli in water, food and sanitary samples.
Bile salts inhibit Gram-positive organisms and lactose fermentation produces gas in Durham tubes. Elevated-temperature incubation increases selectivity for Escherichia coli.
Presumptive LST cultures are transferred to EC Broth and incubated at approximately 44°C, or the broth may be inoculated directly. Gas is a preliminary positive result and E. coli is confirmed by indole and other biochemical tests.
