Description
XLT4 Agar Base is a selective differential medium for detecting non-typhoidal Salmonella.
Tergitol 4 suppresses many Gram-positive and Gram-negative competitors. Xylose, lactose, sucrose and lysine support differentiation, while thiosulfate and ferric citrate reveal hydrogen-sulfide-producing colonies with black centres.
Enrichment cultures are streaked onto completed plates and incubated at 35 ± 2°C for 18–48 hours. Presumptive Salmonella colonies require biochemical or immunological confirmation.
