Description
Christensen Urea Agar is a differential medium for detecting urease activity in bacteria and yeasts.
Urease hydrolyses urea to ammonia and carbon dioxide, increasing the pH and changing phenol red from yellow-orange to pink-red.
The base is completed with Urea 40% Supplement, inoculated with a pure culture and incubated under the conditions stated in the IFU. A pink-red alkaline reaction indicates urease activity.
