Description
Sabouraud CAF Agar with Actidione is a highly selective medium for isolating pathogenic fungi, particularly dermatophytes, from mixed clinical material.
Chloramphenicol suppresses Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, while cycloheximide inhibits saprophytic fungi. The nutrient system and glucose support the pathogenic fungi that remain.
Specimens are streaked onto the medium and incubated aerobically at 25–30°C for two to seven days. Suspected systemic fungi may also be incubated at 35 ± 2°C.
