Description
Tetrathionate Broth Base is a selective enrichment medium for Salmonella, including Salmonella Typhi, from faeces, sewage and related samples.
Iodine converts thiosulfate to tetrathionate, and the combined selective system suppresses many commensal coliforms. Salmonella organisms possessing tetrathionate reductase can multiply; novobiocin may be added to inhibit Proteus.
The sample is inoculated into freshly completed broth, incubated at 36 ± 1°C for 18–24 hours and subcultured to a selective Salmonella isolation medium.
