Description
Kanamycin Aesculin Azide Agar is a selective differential medium for detecting and enumerating enterococci.
Sodium azide and kanamycin suppress competing Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms. Enterococci hydrolyse aesculin, and the resulting aesculetin reacts with ferric ammonium citrate to produce a black halo.
Samples or dilutions are inoculated onto the medium and incubated at approximately 35°C for up to three days. Black or black-haloed colonies are selected for confirmation.
