Description
Phenol Red Agar Base is a differential basal medium for studying bacterial carbohydrate-fermentation reactions.
A selected carbohydrate is added to the base. Acid from fermentation changes phenol red from red-orange to yellow, while gas appears as bubbles or splitting of the agar.
The completed slant-and-butt medium is inoculated by stabbing and streaking and incubated at 36 ± 1°C. Acid, alkaline and gas reactions are interpreted together for biochemical differentiation.
