Description
Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate Agar is a selective differential medium for isolating Salmonella and Shigella from clinical and food samples.
Xylose fermentation, lysine decarboxylation and hydrogen-sulfide production distinguish target colonies from non-pathogenic enteric bacteria. Salmonella commonly forms red colonies with black centres, while Shigella forms red colonies without blackening.
Samples or enrichment cultures are streaked and incubated at 36 ± 1°C for approximately 18–24 hours. The PDF cites ISO 6579:2002.
