Description
Lactose is a purified fermentable carbohydrate for bacteriological culture-media preparation and biochemical testing.
It serves as an energy source and as a differential substrate for detecting lactose fermentation. Acid and, where the formulation permits, gas production can be used to distinguish lactose-fermenting organisms from non-fermenters.
The powder is incorporated into the selected culture-medium formulation at the stated concentration before sterilisation or final preparation.
