Description
Chromatic EC X-Gluc Agar is a selective chromogenic medium for detecting and enumerating Escherichia coli in water and food.
Bile salts inhibit Gram-positive bacteria and X-glucuronide is cleaved by the beta-D-glucuronidase characteristic of most E. coli, producing blue to blue-green colonies. Tryptophan permits indole confirmation.
Water samples are membrane-filtered and incubated at 44 ± 0.5°C for 18–24 hours. Blue-green, indole-positive colonies are counted as Escherichia coli.
