Description
Lactose Broth is a non-selective enrichment and presumptive test medium used in food, water, dairy and pharmaceutical microbiology.
Lactose-fermenting organisms produce acid and gas. When Durham tubes are used, visible gas supports presumptive detection of coliform bacteria. The medium may also be used as a pre-enrichment broth in Salmonella examination.
Samples or cultures are inoculated into the prepared broth and incubated under the conditions stated for the relevant application. Positive presumptive tubes are taken forward to the appropriate confirmation medium.
